On Tuesday, experts revealed that more than 80% of asthma cases in India are undiagnosed, which, if left untreated, can worsen over time. World Asthma Day is an annual event observed on the first Tuesday of May aimed at raising awareness about asthma, a chronic respiratory disease affecting millions worldwide.

Asthma is a chronic respiratory condition that affects 339 million people worldwide. It is characterized by inflamed and narrowed airways in the lungs as well as increased mucus production, resulting in breathing problems, chest tightness, wheezing, and coughing. Dr. Manisha Mendiratta, HOD and Senior Consultant, Pulmonology at Sarvodaya Hospital in Faridabad, noted that the prevalence of asthma in India is around 3%, out of which more than 80% of patients remain undiagnosed.

According to Dr. Mendiratta, the main reason behind the increased number of undiagnosed cases is a lack of sufficient resources, infrastructure, acceptance, and misinformation about the condition. He stated that there is currently no cure for asthma; however, advances in medical research have shown promise for effective management of the condition. Smart inhalers, immunotherapy, biologic medications, bronchial thermoplasty, and virtual reality therapy are some innovative treatments that can help manage and limit the symptoms of asthma.

He also added that among people undergoing treatment for the respiratory condition, less than 1% of patients have properly controlled asthma. He explained that this is caused by a lack of adherence to long-term medication. He also reasoned that in addition to the stigma attached to inhalers, there are also several misconceptions, such as that inhalers are addiction-forming and can lead to side effects. This prevents patients from seeking proper treatment.
